Gender Affirming Letters
I decided to medically transition. Where do I start?
When you meet with your doctor to discuss the gender-affirming steps you would like to take, you may be required to provide your doctor or insurance company with a letter from a mental health professional. This is because they want to ensure that you are mentally and emotionally prepared for the changes that will happen when undergoing medical transitions.
Assessments for gender-affirming letters
PCMBH offers assessments for gender-affirming letters using the WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Standards of Care (Version 7) guidelines. After an assessment, a counselor would confidently be able to write a letter of recommendation for gender-affirming surgery and/or HRT Assessment for gender-affirming letters usually takes 2-4 sessions. You can expect to be met with someone who wants to support you on your journey through transition. While we need to do our due diligence in assessing you, it is not our goal to make the medical transition process more difficult, or to be a barrier in treatment. Our job is to make sure you understand the potential risks and benefits of the treatment we are recommending (HRT or surgery), and to help you move forward on your path and gain full agency over your transition. We are happy to help and advocate for your care in a manner that is both depathologizing and empowering of gender diversity, fully acknowledging your right to self-determination.
