EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced-based treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other conditions related to past traumatic experiences, which can include anxiety, depression, panic, and others.  EMDR is endorsed by the World Health Organization, US Department of Veterans Affairs, American Psychiatric Association and numerous other entities as an effective treatment.

EMDR utilizes eye movements or other bi-lateral (side to side) stimulation to activate and strengthen the client’s own information processing systems, a process which is believed to support the brain’s ability to heal itself.  Often during sessions, clients describe spontaneous reductions in the intensity of negative feelings associated with traumatic memory.  Additionally, many clients report significant improvements to beliefs that were negatively affected by the traumatic event.

Unlike many other trauma-focused therapies, EMDR does not require in-depth discussion of past events, or homework outside of session.  Treatment duration and preparation requirements can vary based on an individual’s history and current symptoms, but results can be significant and durable.  An EMDR trained therapist can assist you in understanding if this treatment is right for you, and what to expect during it.
