Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented and naturalistic approach to the resolution and healing of trauma, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Rather than focusing exclusively on thoughts or emotions associated with traumatic events in our lives, SE expands to include our natural, bodily responses. SE follows a gentle, incremental approach aimed at assisting you in repairing and completing the natural cycle your body possesses to release traumatic activation.

By directly addressing the energy created in your nervous system during a traumatic event, SE can help you build greater awareness, coherence, vitality, and self-regulation. The result is a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection, with improved ability to release and regulate emotions. SE can help you to work through painful feelings of anger, guilt, or shame, as well as somatic symptoms like headaches, chronic pain, digestive distress, and sleep difficulties.

Therapists who practice SE believe a person’s inner feelings impact their physical form. They use mind-body exercises to release pent-up trauma both psychologically and physiologically. Your SE therapist will work with you towards healing your trauma from the inside out.
